Savings expert identifies best deals during Memorial Day holiday weekend

DENVER — Turn on the TV or open the newspaper around Memorial Day and you are inundated with advertisements from retailers touting their Memorial Day sales.

But are those deals really worth it? And what are the best and worst things to buy on this shopping weekend?

Kendal Perez is a savings expert with FreeShipping.org. She says that the best things to buy this holiday weekend are clothing, mattresses, refrigerators and home goods.

Don’t go for electronics or seasonal items, like grills and patio furniture.

Serlevia O`Kain is out shopping for deals before a family gathering this weekend. “I love Memorial Day sales because you do get bargains.” Serlevia comes to the stores prepared. It’s exactly what Kendal Perez says every shopper should do.

Five puppies found abandoned in restroom trashcan in Highlands Ranch

DENVER – Five puppies less than a week old were found abandoned in a restroom trashcan at Highland Heritage Regional Park Tuesday afternoon, Douglas County Animal Law Enforcement reported.

Park workers called police after a man found the brown-and-black puppies in the trash at the park, near South University Boulevard and South Quebec Street, DCALE reported.

The animals were all suffering from low body temperatures, and one died. Veterinarians were able to stabilize the other four, though their long-term health remains uncertain.

“This is a senseless act of animal cruelty, and we are hopeful that the public will help bring the individual responsible for this crime to justice” said Sergeant Erica Dalton with Douglas County Animal Law Enforcement.

Anyone with information in the case was asked to call investigators at 303-660-7529.

The dogs went to the Dumb Friends League in Castle Rock.

New technology could help more women get pregnant via in vitro fertilization

DENVER — A breakthrough in medical technology could help women trying to get pregnant through in vitro fertilization.

A clinic in Colorado is one of only a handful in the US with the new device.

Scientists are calling this a “game changer” for in vitro fertilization, saying it could dramatically increase a woman’s odds of getting pregnant with IVF.

Jolene Richardson and her husband were trying to get pregnant for almost a year and she says, “We just knew something wasn’t right.”

So the couple came to the Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine for in vitro fertilization. But, like millions of women – she was up against the odds.

The average success rate for IVF in women under 35 is just 30-35 percent.

But four years and two children later CCRM had such an impact on Jolene’s life, she now works there, and sees the latest advances in medical technology.

Prince Harry attends opening ceremony of Warrior games in Colo. Springs

DENVER — Prince Harry arrived in Colorado Friday afternoon with a full schedule ahead of him.

The royal’s first stop was at the Sanctuary Golf Course near Denver, where he spoke with Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock during the private reception.

Harry also shook hands with Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Missy Franklin, and he even serenaded her for her 18th birthday.

The prince’s tour has a strong central theme of advocating for injured military members from both the UK and U.S. Armed Forces.

He wants to highlight their extraordinary commitment and sacrifice, according to Harry’s private secretary.

And that publicity started Thursday in our nation’s capitol.

He arrived in Washington D.C. to meet Sen. John McCain—and to a waiting throng of cameras and screaming fans.

The Weld County Board of Commissioners and Aims Community College used the event as an opportunity to talk about the projects and programs the revenue from the oil and gas industry helps to fund.

"This event was a great opportunity for the Board to talk about what projects the county is able to undertake as a result of the oil and gas revenue," said Commissioner Chairman William Garcia. Those projects include:

TABOR Refund: Every real property owner in Weld County receives a temporary tax credit on the County mill levy, and the County is able to extend the tax credit primarily due to the revenue from oil and gas.
