A pastor from Highlands Ranch survived the deadly tornado that struck Joplin, Mo., by huddling with his family members in an apartment.

Todd Nelson, a pastor at Mountainview Community Church, was attending his daughter’s graduation from Ozark Christian College when the twister demolished the rural town, according to friends of the Nelson family.

Coloradans told to beware of scam artists exploiting Midwest tornado victims

Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler and Colorado Attorney General John Suthers warned Coloradans today on how to avoid charity scams in the wake of the recent Midwest storms. Both officials urged Coloradans to be wary of unregistered charities or other entities looking to use the deadly storms to scam consumers.

“Coloradans will no doubt want to help—we want to make sure their help makes it to the right place,” Gessler said.  “Anyone considering donating should check the charity on my office’s website, to be sure the money is going to an established, legitimate charity.  Our website contains charity reports that can shed light on how the charity is managed and how your donation will be spent.” 

Regis University president to retire

Rev. Michael Sheeran announced Tuesday he’ll retire as president of Regis University in the summer of 2012.

Sheeran, who’s headed Colorado’s only Jesuit Catholic university since January 1993, first joined Regis in 1975 as assistant professor of history and political science. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1970.

Plan allowing Coloradans to pay overdue taxes this fall without fines moves forward in House

House lawmakers moved forward with a proposal allowing Coloradoans with overdue taxes to pay what they owe without facing fees, fines or interest.

              The House approved the bill on a voice vote Tuesday, setting up a final vote for approval on Wednesday. The measure would set up a "tax amnesty" period of two months this fall for taxpayers with overdue taxes.

Nearly every day of the week, the 71-year-old retiree spends hours on end in the basement of his Highlands Ranch home, tooling around and working out the bugs in his inventions. His work bench is strewn with electronic gadgets, wires, tools of all kinds.

“It looks like a mad inventor lives down there,” he says.

Colo. unemployment rate dips slightly to 9.2 percent in March

Colorado labor officials say the state unemployment rate dipped to 9.2 percent in March, as employers added about 500 nonfarm payroll jobs over the month.

The unemployment rate was 9.3 percent in February.

The state labor department said Tuesday that Coloradans are earning slightly more per hour and working slightly more hours per week than a year ago.

Developmental disability grant applications accepted through April 28

Douglas County will accept grant applications through Thursday, April 28 for projects or programs that focus on meeting the varied needs of Douglas County residents with developmental disabilities.

Applications will be reviewed and oral presentations scheduled for May.  All proposals must be approved by the Douglas County Commissioners.  Grantees will be notified of their funding status approximately June 30.
