Xcel Energy prepares for storm with additional resources | Weather

Due to the expected size of the predicted snow storm, as well as the amount of leaves still on the trees, Xcel Energy is taking additional measures to assure that any widespread or prolonged power outages that may occur are handled as quickly as possible. The company is bringing crews from Grand Junction to assist, plus crews from Texas are prepared to help with outages too. “Though snow storms are not out of the ordinary in Colorado, we have a unique situation as many trees still have leaves on them,” said David Eves, president and CEO of Public Service Co. of Colorado, an Xcel Energy company. “The added weight of the snow gathering on leaves could cause branches to break, adding to the number of outages.
Xcel Energy must respond to adverse weather conditions on many occasions throughout the year often times with no warning. In this case, we have to ability to prepare ahead of time for a potentially large storm. Our priority is to keep the power on and our employees and customers safe.”

- Weather events also can create hazardous electric conditions. Customers should assume that any power line on the ground is energized. Never touch or move a downed power line. Lines that have fallen also energize what they touch, so be careful of downed lines across fences or other equipment, including cars in which you may be riding. If you are in a car, remain in the vehicle until help arrives. Call 911 or 1-800-895-1999 to report any downed power lines.
