March much drier than normal, April weather preview

March much drier than normal, April weather preview

DENVER -- It's no surprise, but March 2011 was significantly drier than normal.  Only 2.5 inches of snow fell during what is usually metro Denver's snowiest month, when the average March snowfall is 11.7 inches.

To put last month's lack of snow into perspective, March 2011 is one of the least snowiest in nearly 130 years.  It ties March 1918 as the 8th least snowiest March in Denver since 1882, and during the past 30 years only 1982 and 2004 received less snow.   The month was also almost 4 degrees warmer than normal.

Neighborhood weekly forecast

It will be a warm week with temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

Your neighborhood weather forecast

This is spring break for some, so we thought we’d go over some of the finer points of this week’s forecast.  Bottom line:  It’s all fine weather for you unless you’re in farming.  The unusually warm weather means unusually low humidity, and that could spell big time fire danger for parts of the front range, especially on Wednesday when we see temperatures in the mid 70s.

For spring skiers and snowboarders we see spring skiing conditions with most areas expecting daytime high temperatures in the lower to mid 50s.  Snow pack has been well above average, so you shouldn’t be worrying about rocks scuffing your ride!  Water levels in the mountain reservoirs will start to rise as snow continues to melt.

Winter sports enthusiasts at risk as Colorado avalanche forecast center in jeopardy

Press Release

Colorado leads the nation in avalanche fatalities

Friends of CAIC hosts G.N.A.R Premier to help offset CAIC Budget Cuts The Colorado Avalanche Information Center’s backcountry forecasting funding is under scrutiny by the state legislature.

A non?profit group of young skiers is taking steps to raise funds and awareness to keep this important program alive, with an event on Thursday, March 10th in Denver.

The Governor and the Joint Budget Committee recently announced plans to balance the budget in Colorado in 2011 including cutting the severance tax funding of the Colorado Avalanche information Center.

Colorado leads the nation in avalanche fatalities, and already has seen five deaths this winter from avalanches. With winter still raging and large spring storms on the way, more and more skiers venture into the backcountry, and the CAIC forecasts are the best source of information to keep them safe. It is imperative that we keep the CAIC running and providing valuable information for both recreational users and professionals venturing into the backcountry.

Weather for the week

According to FOX 31 Meteorologist Nick Carter, the month of March will start with unusually mild temperatures and lots of sunshine.

“There’s an old saying about the month of March; if it starts out mild, the month is in like a lamb, but the end could go out like a lion.” Carter said.  “That’s because any and every kind of weather is possible during this month.”

March is normally the snowiest month for eastern Colorado, and 2011 has been pretty dry.
